tabla  Function: noun
Etymology: Arabic; Urdu/Hindi from Arabic, connoting
sublime timbral pleasure
1 : goblet drum; term used in Palestine, aka dumbek, darbukka
2 : pair of hand-finger drums from the northern regions of South Asia; its humble origins as a folk-religious instrument are likely located in the foothills of the Punjab; initially developed and performed as a sophisticated art-music instrument by hereditary musician groups (castes) who were ascribed low social status by their elite patrons; underwent bourgeoisification largely due to 20th century nationalist musical revival movements led by V.N. Bhatkhande and V.D.Paluskar, resulting in first-generation, non-hereditary performers of the instrument who at present dominate the scene; its cultural/physical diffusion from South Asia was executed primarily by two great performers of the mid to late 20th century: Ustad Allah Rakha and his son Ustad Zakir Hussain; at present the most popular Hindustani musical instrument of transnational stature; an instrument that has adapted favourably to changes in recording technology: sampled in numerous film soundtracks, employed in hundreds of fusion bands; performed and adored by numerous people of South Asian and non-South Asian background; an ubiquitous digitized, sonic, floating signifier in many soundscapes of the early 21st century
